Kansas City, we are having a massive year. From the influx of sports fans and tourists to the non-stop buzz of our local food and music scene, the "Heart of America" is beating faster than ever. But as our city gets busier and the crowds get bigger, there’s one thing we can’t afford to overlook: our community’s safety and preparedness.
That’s why this weekend (and later this month!), the Kansas City Health Department is throwing a different kind of event. Imagine a classic KC block party, think free hot dogs, fluffy cotton candy, ice-cold snow cones, and live music, blended with hands-on, life-saving training that could literally make you a hero in your own neighborhood.
Welcome to Match Ready KC: Heart of the City. It’s the ultimate "fun meets functional" event, and you’re invited!
Why a Block Party? (The Vibe)
Let’s be real: sometimes the idea of "emergency training" can feel a little intimidating or even scary. We usually think of sterile classrooms or long, boring seminars. But the KC Health Department is flipping the script. By framing this as a community block party, they’re making safety accessible, family-friendly, and, dare we say, a total blast.

When you show up to a Match Ready KC event, the first thing you’ll notice isn’t the training mannequins, it’s the smell of fresh popcorn and the sound of local music. This is a "come-and-go" style event, meaning you can drop in, grab a snack, and spend as much or as little time as you want.
What’s on the menu?
Free Hot Dogs & Chips: The classic block party staple.
Cotton Candy: Spun fresh for the kids (and the kids at heart).
Snow Cones: The perfect treat for a sunny May morning in KC.
Music & Giveaways: Keeping the energy high while you learn.
It’s about bringing people together. As Dr. Marvia Jones, Director of Health for the Kansas City Health Department, puts it: “This is about preparation, not fear. As our city becomes busier, community readiness matters. These trainings help people feel confident stepping in to help a neighbor, a visitor, or a loved one when seconds matter.”
Life-Saving Skills You Actually Need
While the food is a huge draw, the "heart" of the event is the training. The goal of Match Ready KC is to train 100 or more residents in every session. Why? Because when a medical emergency happens in a crowded space, like a parade, a concert, or even just a busy Saturday at the City Market, first responders can sometimes face delays getting through traffic or crowds.
If everyday people (like you and me!) know what to do in those first critical minutes, we can save lives.
At the block party, there are multiple hands-on stations where experts will guide you through:
1. Hands-Only CPR
You don't need to be a doctor to save a life. Hands-only CPR is simple to learn and incredibly effective. You'll practice the rhythm and depth on mannequins so that if you ever need to use it, your muscle memory kicks in.
2. Narcan Training
With the opioid crisis affecting communities across the country, knowing how to administer Narcan (naloxone) is a vital skill. It’s a safe, easy-to-use nasal spray that can reverse an overdose. Learning this isn't just about safety; it's about compassion.
3. Stop the Bleed
In the event of a serious injury, uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death. You’ll learn how to use simple tools (and even your own hands) to stop blood loss until help arrives.
4. EpiPen Demonstrations
Severe allergic reactions can happen anywhere, at a restaurant, a park, or a school. Knowing exactly how to use an EpiPen can prevent a situation from becoming fatal.
5. Pet CPR (Yes, really!)
We know our KC Lifestyle Girl audience loves their furry friends. One of the coolest parts of this event is the Pet CPR station. You’ll learn how to perform life-saving measures on your dogs and cats, ensuring your four-legged family members are safe, too.

Walk Away with More Than Just a Full Belly
The best part? Once you complete the training stations, you’ll receive an official certificate of completion. It’s a great way to show that you’re "Match Ready" and dedicated to the safety of our city. Plus, it looks pretty great on a resume or a community volunteer profile!
Meeting the Partners
You won’t just be learning from the Health Department. A whole host of community partners will be on-site to provide resources and answer questions, including:
Charlie’s House: Experts in home safety and preventing childhood injuries.
Local Fire & EMT Personnel: The real-life heroes who keep KC running every day.
Safety Organizations: Groups dedicated to making Kansas City a healthier, safer place for everyone.
