Let’s be real, Kansas City is absolutely showing off lately. The trees are green, the fountains are flowing, and the humidity hasn’t reached “I need three showers today” levels just yet. It’s the perfect time to get out and explore everything our metro has to offer without breaking the bank.
If you’re looking for free events in Kansas City this weekend, you’ve come to the right place. From outdoor movies under the stars to pink cafe trucks and adorable dog-centric parties, May 15–17 is packed with flavor and fun. Grab your sunnies, pack a lawn chair, and let’s dive into your ultimate guide for things to do in Kansas City this weekend!
Friday, May 15: Movies and Main Streets
Kick off the weekend with some classic community vibes. Friday is all about winding down from the work week with some fresh air and local flair.
Downtown Olathe Movie Night (Zootopia 2)
Nothing says "weekend" quite like an outdoor movie. Head over to Johnson County Square in Downtown Olathe for a free showing of Zootopia 2. This is a total win for families or even a cute, low-key date night.
Where: Johnson County Square (100 N Kansas Ave, Olathe, KS)
When: Friday, May 15 | Movie starts at dark (around 8:00 pm)
The Deets: Arvest Bank is providing free popcorn while supplies last! You’re welcome to bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.
Pro-Tip: Bring the thickest blanket you own or those comfy collapsible lawn chairs. The grass is great, but a little cushioning goes a long way.

West 39th Street Third Friday
If you prefer a more "stroll and shop" vibe, the West 39th Street District is the place to be. Every third Friday, this historic neighborhood comes alive with a little extra magic.
Where: West 39th Street District (between State Line and Southwest Trafficway)
When: Friday evening hours
The Deets: Expect boutique sales, happy hour specials at local favorites, and live music popping up along the sidewalks.
Why we love it: It’s one of the best spots for people-watching and catching that authentic KC creative energy. Plus, the shopping is top-tier.
Saturday, May 16: Markets, Merch, and Mutts
Saturday is absolutely stacked. You’re going to need a plan (and maybe an extra shot of espresso) to hit all these amazing events this weekend in Kansas City.
West Bottoms Heritage Days Pop-Up Market
The Strawberry Swing is back in the West Bottoms, and it’s going to be a maker’s paradise. They are taking over the Liberty Courtyard with over 75 local makers.

The Deets: Beyond the incredible handmade goods, there will be live music and a lineup of food trucks. It’s the perfect spot to snag a unique gift or something special for your own home.
Vibe Check: Think industrial-chic meets local-love. It’s very Instagrammable, so dress accordingly!

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck
Calling all Sanrio fans! The world’s cutest truck is rolling into Town Center Plaza. If you want exclusive merch and treats that are almost too cute to eat, this is your stop.
